Digital Business

Digitisation affects practically all aspects of modern companies and organisations, which means that this topic is extremely broad. At present, the Institute for Information and Process Management is primarily concerned with the following research topics:

Semantic Lifting – Converting «dumb» data into formal models

Digital production chains are based on the exchange of digital models along the chain that can be interpreted by a computer. This requires a high degree of interoperability between the companies involved as well as the IT systems used, which is not always the case in real-life. Using semantic lifting, data that is available digitally but not machine-interpretable (e.g. PDF files) can be converted into formal models, thus allowing a computer to understand and execute them. Existing media breaks can thus be closed with limited effort.

Despite the high degree of automation enabled by digital change, experience and lessons learned continue to play an essential role because they are the prerequisite for the increased demand for good judgement and problem-solving in unforeseen events. At the same time, digital transformation opens up new opportunities for implementing solutions for automatically capturing, exchanging and preserving lessons learned. These should be embedded in the relevant processes and offer support that is both context-aware and situation-specific. Besides, we investigate and prototype new ways of interacting with digital support systems (such as Augmented Reality or Conversational Interfaces), which take the specific demands of the workplace into account, and study and optimize the respective user experience in real-life contexts.

Companies have different starting points, requirements and opportunities for digitalization. SMEs, in particular, face the problem of identifying and prioritising their specific digitalization potential. Based on lessons learned and good practices guidelines can be developed, e.g. in the form of a navigator, to enable companies to cope with digital change and obtain tailor-made recommendations.
