High-frequency electronics and optoelectronics

The high-frequency electronics and optoelectronics competence area deals with communication technology, radar technology and HF sensor technology, signal processing and HF measurement technology. High-frequency electronics is omnipresent nowadays, even if it is often hidden.

The ESA Institute offers experience in the following areas of expertise:

  • Implementation of “smart sensors” for applications in Industry 4.0 or the Internet of Things (IoT) with special attention to power consumption and battery life. Our knowledge of the wireless standards in use today enables us to extract the best for the defined application.
  • Development of proprietary protocols. This allows our solutions to use radio chips that are used in applications for which they were not intended. In addition to expertise in protocol development (i.e. signal processing, signal conditioning, filters, communication protocol), expertise in the RF area is crucial for customers, as the path through product qualification is a major challenge.
  • Development and application of radar systems and RF sensors in various frequency ranges for customer-specific requirements: This includes simulation, antenna development, RF electronics, the necessary signal processing and RF measurement technology.
  • Miniaturization: There is a tendency to increase the frequency of radio systems. At high frequencies, the wavelength is so small that the antenna can be integrated directly at wafer level together with the RF chip.
  • This opens the door to a range of interdisciplinary services in the field of RF simulations, wafer integration and RF measurement technology - all competencies that the ESA Institute can offer from a single source with a high chance of success.
