Air Pollution Affects the Respiratory System
COPD is one of the most common chronic lung diseases worldwide. In Kyrgyzstan, the disease is caused not only by cigarette smoke but also by air pollution, dust, and smoke from stoves and open fires. This is where the international research project begins. Together with local physicians, physiotherapy students at the Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences (OST) are investigating whether supplemental oxygen can improve the effectiveness of pulmonary rehabilitation. The clinical study is led by Dr. Stéphanie Saxer, lecturer at OST, and is supported, among others, by the Eastern Switzerland Lung Association.

Students Conduct Research in Kyrgyzstan
For the students, the project offers far more than an introduction to research. Over the course of eight weeks, they work directly with patients, conduct assessments, and support the rehabilitation process. This gives them the opportunity to experience research in a real-world clinical setting while gaining valuable international experience.
Spencer Rezek, Clinical Specialist at Kantonsspital Winterthur, physiotherapist, and research associate at the Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences (OST), supervises the students on site. What Supplemental Oxygen Can Do
Initial observations show that pulmonary rehabilitation benefits participants regardless of which study group they are in. Many regain confidence in their bodies and are able to return to a more active daily life. Whether supplemental oxygen during exercise further enhances these benefits will be determined after the data analysis has been completed in Switzerland.
At the same time, the project contributes to the exchange of knowledge between Switzerland and Kyrgyzstan. In addition to generating new scientific insights, it helps strengthen local rehabilitation services and equips students with valuable skills for their future careers.
