BigStoreSwarm – Reducing winter electricity peaks caused by heat pump heating systems through the use of large water storage tanks in existing and new buildings
The future mass deployment of heat pumps carries the risk of generating a problematic additional peak load on the national electricity grid during the winter months. The BigStoreSwarm project investigated the flexibility potential offered by integrating large thermal energy water storage tanks (TES) into both existing and new residential buildings. To identify the optimal configurations, the research involved a comprehensive dynamic simulation study using TRNSYS, combining various Swiss building energy standards with photovoltaic systems and real climate profiles.
Furthermore, swarm intelligence concepts were evaluated through decentralized, IoT-based Multi-Agent Systems for energy coordination at the neighborhood level. Finally, this methodological approach was completed by a techno-economic analysis to estimate the required investments and the potential macroeconomic benefits for electricity grid costs.
