Research project
DepoTES – Seasonal thermal energy storage in landfill material
The DepoTES project is investigating the possibility of thermally activating landfill material and thus using landfills as seasonal thermal energy stores. To this end, plastic pipes are installed as heat exchangers in the landfill body during backfilling. This allows the underground to be tapped more cheaply and efficiently than with conventional geothermal probes. As part of the project are being investigated at specific sites and the thermal properties of landfill bodies are being measured. In addition, promising pipe materials will be laid in landfill operations under the load of heavy machinery and tested for leak tightness and pressure resistance after one year. The requested studies are intended to prepare and promote the realization of pilot projects.
