StoWaDim-WRG – Efficiency and Storage Sizing with Shower Water Heat Recovery
In modern, well-insulated buildings, the relative share of hot water demand in total heat demand is steadily increasing. Since showering significantly determines hot water demand and daily hot water peaks, heat recovery from shower wastewater offers considerable potential for increasing energy efficiency. Furthermore, depending on the installation configuration, such systems also enable a reduction in the volume of domestic hot water storage tanks. In the StoWaDim-WRG project, these effects were investigated and evaluated using stochastic demand analyses.
The potential energy savings and the reduction in storage volume depend heavily on three different installation configurations, which are distinguished accordingly in the report. The heat recovery system can either preheat only the cold water for the shower, only the cold water entering the storage tank, or both simultaneously.
However, actual operational efficiency is influenced by numerous other parameters, such as heat losses in the shower cabin, the thermal mass of the unit, or efficiency losses due to fouling. The SPF Institute for Solar Technology conducts dynamic simulations using stochastic load profiles and can calculate these influences. This enables precise, property-specific sizing of the domestic hot water storage tank and recommendations for heat recovery system installation that also take hygiene requirements into account.
