Research project
Talking Pictures for Seniors – Demand analysis for further development of picture-based communication tool
The project “Talking Pictures for Seniors” explores how picture-based communication can enhance interactions in nursing homes. As part of this Innovation cheque project, the team of the Institute for Ageing Research IAF in collaboration with Talking Pictures conducts a user-centred needs assessment to inform the further development of an image-based, inclusive communication tool.
The project “Talking Pictures for Seniors” aims to develop a new picture-based communication tool specifically designed for geriatric and long-term care settings. While Talking Pictures already exists as a proven solution in paediatric and adult emergency contexts, there is currently no version that addresses the unique needs of older adults with linguistic or cognitive limitations.
The IAF team will carry out a needs assessment (workshop and interviews) as the first and essential step toward developing Talking Pictures for Seniors. The study will identify key communication barriers, everyday care scenarios, and design requirements in nursing homes. The findings will form the foundation for the future design and development of Talking Pictures for Seniors, identifying relevant communication topics and interaction patterns optimized for age-related conditions such as reduced vision or cognitive decline.
