Development of a defrostable heat exchanger for ice storages in solar thermal heat pump systems

To improve the system’s efficiency of heating installations that combine solar collectors and heat pumps ice storages can be used. A possible disadvantage when using ice storages is that growing ice layers on the heat exchanger’s surfaces in the ice storage increase the heat transfer resistance which leads to lower COP of the heat pumps during periods with high heat demand due to lower source temperatures. To improve the heat transfer across the heat exchangers in the ice storage during these periods a periodical defrosting of the heat exchangers is proposed and presented in this paper.
