Talking Pictures for Seniors

15.01.2026

Our project “Talking Pictures for Seniors” explores how image-based communication can enhance interaction in residential and nursing care homes. In collaboration with the company Talking Pictures, the Institute for Aging Research (IAF) is conducting a user-centred needs assessment as part of an Innosuisse Innovation Voucher, with the aim of supporting the further development of an inclusive communication tool.

While “Talking Pictures” is already being used successfully in paediatric and adult emergency care, a version tailored to older adults with language or cognitive impairments is still lacking.

Through workshops and interviews, the project team — Cornelia Ursprung  and Simone Eicher — identifies key communication barriers and everyday scenarios in residential and nursing care homes. The findings form the basis for an adapted design of the tool that takes age-related limitations such as reduced visual acuity or cognitive changes into account.
