Research project
Promoting hydration in people living with dementia: Development and feasibility testing of a complex intervention
People with dementia are particularly at risk of not drinking enough. The international research project ProHydraDem aims to develop and test a scientifically based intervention to improve their long-term fluid intake. The project involves researchers from OST – University of Applied Sciences of Eastern Switzerland, the Medical University of Graz, and Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg.
The project focuses on developing care interventions to ensure that people with dementia are getting enough fluids. These interventions will then be evaluated based on their effectiveness and feasibility. People with dementia, their family caregivers and nursing professionals are all actively involved in the project.
Studies are being conducted in three care settings (acute care hospitals, nursing homes, and home care) across three countries (Switzerland, Austria, and Germany) to develop these measures.
The results will provide a scientific basis for nursing practice and future research.
From a societal perspective, reducing the risk of dehydration among people with dementia is of great importance, particularly in light of climate change and prolonged heatwaves.
ProHydraDem is funded through the Weave programme by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). The programme supports transnational research projects that are selected through a joint review process based on scientific excellence criteria.
