Participatory Design of a Platform for the Promotion of Assistive Technology in Switzerland

The article describes the participatory development of the “Swiss Silver Platform,” a hybrid (online + offline) information platform for assistive technologies (AT) in Switzerland. The project starts from the premise that information on AT in Switzerland is fragmented (among other factors due to the different language regions), which means that older adults lack consistent, accessible, and trustworthy orientation.

Approach: A three-phase process (Ideation, Discovery, Testing) conducted within an Innosuisse Innovation Booster project (May 2022–March 2023).

Needs assessment (Discovery): Around 31 interviews with people aged 55+ plus informal interviews; more than 75% expressed interest in using the platform in the future. Safety and dementia-related topics are frequently mentioned; “AT” should not be branded as “technology for old people.”

Design outcome (Testing/workshops): The platform should provide product information both online and offline. Products should be validated by end users (with a label/certification), and local stakeholders should help reach more vulnerable groups as well.

Role of Living Labs: Validation should ideally take place via Living Lab testing using standardized methodology and scientific support; about half of respondents would, in principle, be willing to take part in tests/co-creation.

Digital divide: Because part of the target group is offline, non-digital formats (e.g., print) and personal counseling must be integral to the “hybrid” concept.
