Congratulations to Fadel Muhammad Zikrillah!

Fadel Muhammad Zikrillah and his team have won Stanford University’s Global Sustainability Challenge 2026 with their “Cool Fish” project. The project focuses on sustainable, off-grid cooling of fish after harvest in Indonesia. In the fall of 2025, Fadel participated in the i3s International Summer School for Sustainability at OST, where he was introduced to solar-powered cooling technologies developed as part of the SophiA project. Building on this experience, Fadel and his team independently developed the Cool Fish project to address key technical and economic barriers facing small-scale fisheries. Among other features, it boasts a foldable design for easy transport in a boat. The project’s success underscores the vital role of academic exchange programs.

Noble Banadda International Summer School on Sustainability 2025

The 60 participants gathered with one goal: to learn together, exchange ideas, and work on solutions for a more sustainable future.
Professor Nicholas Kiggundu from Makerere University in Uganda introduced the students to the SophiA project, from which the i3s Summer School also originated.
One of the excursions led through the facilities of Everllence (formerly MAN) in Zurich.
The dinner at the castle of Rapperswil was one of the highlights.
During a spontaneous visit to the chemistry lab, Dr. Mihaela Dudita-Kauffeld sparked a fascination for technology even among the youngest guests.

The 4th International Summer School on Sustainability i3s was a great success. Sixty students from 15 countries across four continents gathered at OST – Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences in Rapperswil-Jona to work towards a more sustainable future and to expand their network.

The program included expert lectures, workshops, and excursions. The students engaged deeply with topics such as industrial heat pumps, solar technology, energy technology, PFAS, and sustainability management. Among other activities, they visited the production facilities of Everllence (formerly MAN Energy Solutions) in Zurich and the Werdhölzli wastewater treatment plant in Zurich.
