Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) for Young People with Dementia and Their Families: Design and Pilot Study.

A dementia diagnosis before the age of 65 affects people in the midst of their lives, which are full of professional, family and social obligations. The psychological strain on those affected and their families is enormous, and appropriate support services are scarce. This project will develop and test a mindfulness-based stress reduction program tailored to this target group for the first time, with scientific oversight and a participatory design.

Persons with young-onset dementia face unique challenges: they give up their careers, experience the gradual loss of independence and face a lack of understanding and social isolation. Their loved ones — often partners or children — simultaneously juggle caregiving, work, and family life. The emotional strain on both sides is significant, with symptoms of anxiety and depression being commonplace.

This is precisely where this research project comes in. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is an evidence-based programe combining meditation, gentle physical exercises and psychoeducation. It has been shown to reduce stress, anxiety and depression in many different groups of people. However, there is currently no adapted version for persons with young-onset dementia and their families, nor has any intervention study been conducted.

This project aims to address this gap: In close collaboration with the PortoFaro practice project, the certified MBSR provider Modus Sein and the OST Dementia Competence Centre, we are developing a tailored MBSR program. Rather than simply shortening the classic eight-week program, a standalone concept is being created with modular units, simplified language, and flexible formats, including in-person sessions, short digital inputs, and exercises relevant to daily life. The course structure has also been adapted. People with dementia and their families are involved from the outset.

OST's accompanying scientific research will conduct a pilot study using mixed methods to examine whether and how the program works. Is it feasible? Is it well received? Are there initial indications of its impact, for example on stress, well-being and quality of life? The results will inform the further development of the program after the project concludes, with the aim of creating a standardized program that can be implemented in the long term and replicated in other regions.

The project is part of the PortoFaro consortium and aims to contribute to needs- and evidence-based care for a group that has received too little support to date.
