Cactus: Comparison Platform for UI Libraries from an Accessibility Perspective

20.06.2024

The Cactus project is an independent platform that enables the comparison of the accessibility of UI libraries. UI libraries are collections of components and styles that are used on websites or web applications. The aim of Cactus is to provide a reliable source of information on which libraries are accessible to reduce the effort and therefore the costs of accessible development. The libraries are tested using the Cactus Testlab and a library of criteria for various

types of components.

Cactus is community-driven. This means that Cactus users test libraries and thus contribute to the ratings. With the help of the community, we hope to cover as many libraries as possible. By opening up testing to everyone, the results are transparent and hopefully understandable. In addition, we hope that testing will also provide an easy way to introduce developers to accessibility.

The project was developed by Mathias Lenz as part of a bachelor thesis at the School of Computer Science at the OST in the academic year HS22/23 [1] and is supervised and further developed by the I3. The project has received funding as part of the Innovation Booster Technology & Special Needs (Innosuisse)[2]. The Cactus platform is available at https://cactus.projects-ost.ch/
