GLOBB - Guided Learning Options for Successful Vocational Training for Adolescents with Cognitive and Mental Impairments
Adolescents with cognitive impairments in transition and vocational education: A qualitative Grounded Theory Methodology study for theory development and testing of targeted support services.
Background
The GLOBB project supports adolescents with cognitive and mental impairments in vocational education and training. Many of those affected cannot be caught by existing services – they are too good for disability insurance (IV) but not strong enough for the Federal Certificate of Vocational Education and Training (EBA).
Most young people with mild cognitive impairments are able to perform basic self-care activities and can lead a relatively independent life as adults. However, many require an unusually high level of personal support to complete their training.
Method
A programme will be developed to provide adolescents with holistic support during the transition from upper secondary school (Sekundarstufe II) to vocational education, throughout their apprenticeship, and into successful entry into working life.
For this purpose, individual interviews with apprentices as well as focus groups with employers and vocational training institutions will be conducted. The analysis will follow the Grounded Theory Methodology (GTM).
Outcomes and Impact
GLOBB expects to generate practice-relevant insights into specific needs and promising support strategies. The pilot project will strengthen the adolescents’ academic, vocational, and personal skills, reduce the risk of dropping out of training, and promote sustainable integration into the labour market.
