Research project

Health economics: costs and benefits of selected treatment pathways using breast cancer as an example

The research project aims to investigate and optimize treatment costs and pathways for a selected chronic disease. On this basis, recommendations for action are to be developed for the implementation partners involved and ideas for new business models are to be elicited. Cost-benefit aspects are to be taken into account and, in particular, patient satisfaction and clinical outcomes are to be analyzed and operationalized. The project offers the opportunity to make a cross-national comparison of costs and services in the healthcare sector for the first time. The Lake Constance region could thus assume a pioneering role internationally.

In the present research project, the cost-benefit comparison of the health care systems in the three countries Switzerland, Germany and Austria was the focus of the considerations. For this purpose, the treatment pathway "breast cancer" was selected and described as an example, both the charged and the actual costs were considered, and patient satisfaction was surveyed within the framework of an empirical study.
