Flood Hazard and Risk Mapping: Proposing a Comprehensive Manual for Iran Based on the Hazard Mapping Procedure in Switzerland

This project aims to develope a technical guide to prepare natural hazard maps for floods in Iran, based on the methods and experiences in Switzerland adopted to the local requirments and conditions.

Natural events, such as floods, flash floods, and debris flows, only pose a hazard when they have the potential to impact people, buildings and/or infrastructure. The initial step in mitigation of such hazards is understanding the associated risks and the affected areas. Iran is a country facing high probability of various natural disasters. In addition to earthquakes, flash floods and debris flows stand out as significant hazard events with considerable damage. Iran has well-developed earthquake hazard maps, however further efforts are needed to enhance the mapping of risks associated with other critical natural events that in turn leads to the risk management solutions.

Prof. Dr. Davood Farshi from Institute of Civil Engineering and Environmental Science (IBU) of OST, and Prof. Dr. Mohammad Javad Ostad Mirza Tehrani from K. N. Toosi University of Technology have explored their shared interests and potential collaborations in this field. Subsequently, the "Research Partnership Grants 2022 of Leading House South Asia and Iran" has been applied in January 2023, under the title "Flood Hazard and Risk Mapping: Proposing a Comprehensive Manual for Iran Based on the Hazard Mapping Procedure in Switzerland." The application was approved by the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation of Switzerland (SERI), and the corresponding research agreement was signed in June 2023.
